Biography

Ari Larissa Heinrich is the author of The Afterlife of Images:  Translating the Pathological Body Between China and the West (Duke, 2008; in Chinese as 图像的来世:关于“病夫”刻板印象的中西传译 (SDX Beijing, 2020)) and Chinese Surplus:  Biopolitical Aesthetics and the Medically Commodified Body (Duke, 2018).  He is co-editor of Embodied Modernities:  Corporeality, Representation, and Chinese Cultures (Hawai'i, 2006, with Fran Martin); Queer Sinophone Cultures (Routledge, 2013, with Howard Chiang); and a special issue of the journal Screen Bodies on Queer Sinofuturisms (Berghahn, 2020, with Howard Chiang and Ta-wei Chi).  Ari is also the translator of Qiu Miaojin's Last Words from Montmartre (New York Review Books, 2014) and Chi Ta-wei's The Membranes (Columbia, 2021).  Ari received an ARC Future Fellowship in 2012, and a Creative Capital/Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant in 2019.
