Dr. Amanda H A Watson is a Research Fellow at the Department of Pacific Affairs, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, Australian National University (ANU).
Dr. Watson has published in various academic journals, including Mobile Media and Communication, Pacific Journalism Review, Media Asia, Australian Journalism Review and The Australian Journal of Emergency Management.
From January 2017 to August 2019, Dr. Watson was part of a small team of ANU academics based in Port Moresby, teaching courses in the University of Papua New Guinea’s School of Business and Public Policy under the ANU-UPNG Partnership. Before that, she worked for several years as a researcher on the use of mobile phones in development. Her PhD thesis looked at the uptake and use of mobile phones during the earliest days of mobile phone adoption in PNG. Dr. Watson has also taught at Divine Word University, Macquarie University, Queensland University of Technology and TAFE NSW.
Dr. Watson's research interests include digital technology in the Pacific, mobile telephones in Papua New Guinea and strategic uses of information and communication technologies in development efforts.
Ongoing, systematic monitoring of mobile internet prices in Papua New Guinea, with co-authors Mr Picky Airi of Divine Word University and Mr Moses Sakai of the University of Papua New Guinea.
Ongoing, systematic monitoring of mobile internet speeds in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and other Pacific island nations, with support of numerous research assistants.
Continuous tracking of regulatory developments regarding telecommunications in the Pacific region, including mandatory mobile telephone registration in Papua New Guinea and wholesale internet pricing negotiations in Papua New Guinea.
Continuous tracking of geostrategic and geopolitical issues that could impact upon technology access in the Pacific. Continuous tracking of corporate issues that may have relevance to technology access across the Pacific.
Murray Thomas (Primary Supervisor) - Interesting times in the land of the unexpected. The research is about the political and legal contest for control of the Papua New Guinea Government in the period 2010-2012, from which Peter O'Neill emerged as the country's premier politician.
