Researcher's projects

Emily's research focuses on Chinese perceptions of the English language and how it has potentially influenced 'Chineseness', spanning Sociolinguistics, China Studies, Cultural Studies and Media Studies. It seeks to dispel superficial assumptions about the role of English in China, how Chinese people view this language and its dominance in a globalised world and the idea of Chinese identity. Her monograph English in China: Language, Identity and Culture was published by Routledge in March 2021.
