Abstract
Xiong Shili 熊å力 (1885-1968) once presented a two-level ti-yong 體用 (the ontological and
the phenomenal) system in the early 1920s. It was precisely based on this two-level ti-yong
system that his philosophical system was increasingly established later. Therefore, the
illumination of this two-level ti-yong system contributes to our better understanding of
Xiong’s whole philosophical thought. Unfortunately, till now there has not been any other
scholar who has noticed this part of Xiong’s thought. Based on Weishixue gailun 唯è˜å¸æ¦‚
è«– (A General Account of YogÄcÄra Learning), a monograph Xiong published in 1923, this
chapter introduces his two-level ti-yong system in detail, analysing his conception of the tiyong conceptual polarity and pointing out the source of his thought, with the purpose of
comprehending Xiong’s ti-yong philosophical system more accurately.
