Body as Phenomenon: A Brief Survey of Secondary Literature of the Body in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

    Abstract

One of the more provocative claims in secondary studies of the body in Chinese literature and culture is that the body is a relatively new phenomenon: something that did not exist until that episodic and arbitrary determination of contemporary reality we often call “the modern.” But to marry the Chinese body to modernity in this sense is also to situate the body in modernity globally. The history of the body in English‐language secondary sources on modern Chinese literature and culture is deeply phenomenological.
