    Abstract

The capability approach is a normative evaluative framework that has advanced assessments of human societies beyond economic growth. The centrality of agency, pluralism, and freedom makes the capability approach attractive for many social science disciplines and policy makers. Nonetheless, it is not a complete tool and needs to be augmented with explanatory social theories such as anthropology.
