    Clifford Geertz was one of the most important anthropologists of the twentieth century. His persuasive vision of culture and strikingly stylish essays also gave him a unique influence in other disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Many scholars believe he played a decisive role in shaping the intellectual climate of his era.
