    Abstract

Wireless Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems provide much better performance than conventional systems that use a single transmitter and receiver. Many papers have investigated its performance under the assumption of signals being uncorrelated or by having an artificial correlation model. In this paper, we develop a general spatial correlation expression from arbitrary scattering patterns. Especially, our model can calculate the spatial correlation between two receive antennas from nT transmitters each with its own scattering pattern. With such expression, we then investigate the location of the transmitters that to optimize the MIMO system performance. The wide applicability of our general formulation is also demonstrated.
