    Abstract

    The COVID-19 pandemic produced a crisis for Australian universities, one that was made increasingly visible to the public through increased media and policy attention. Higher education, we were told, was the fourth largest export industry in the country. The loss of international students endangered not just the universities themselves, but the entire economy. The sudden attention to universities as central pillars of the economy led to intense public debate about the way they were managed, their business model, and their public purpose. But the pandemic impacted not only university management and university staff, but also the lives of university students....
