    Abstract

In this chapter we examine social, cultural, and behavioural factors as causes of disease and how they may affect the effectiveness of interventions to improve health at the population or individual level. We discuss the extent to which ‘lifestyle’ factors contribute to the major chronic diseases, the epidemiology of accidents, poisonings, and violence and social inequalities in health.
