Talking to Strangers

    Abstract

This artwork evolves out of my ongoing research into graffiti and mark-making practices, which I suggest are highly-socialized activities of place-making and commemoration. The work draws upon both the cairn-making practice of Anglo-Australian settler society and the rock landscape painting and vernacular graffiti of contemporary and historical tradition. The intention of the work is to engage with mark-making as a communicative practice and its role in mediating interaction between people and their lived experience of environment.
