    Abstract

This chapter presents experiences of four South African vegetarians and vegans taking into account the diversity of the South African community. To contextualize these experiences, we first describe the meanings of food in South Africa and factors that may influence food choice. This discussion is then followed by a narration of interviews from four participants who represent three of the major ethnic groups in South Africa (Black, Indian and White)
