    Abstract

Women are leaders across Asia and the Pacific. Despite significant cultural, socio-economic and political barriers, women hold leadership positions in a range of sectors, industries and professions. Women bring important perspectives, experiences, issues, interests and needs to decision-making spaces across the region, surmounting significant obstacles, criticism and backlash. This research is interested in how and why individual women have become leaders: how, given significant barriers, have women become leaders in political, social and economic spheres; and why, when women are threatened with violence and social exclusion, do women still pursue political, social and economic leadership?
